Mexico's first domestic paper currency, issued under Agustín de Iturbide's short-lived empire in the months before his forced abdication in March 1823. The notes were authorized as part of a desperate attempt to stabilize imperial finances that had been in crisis almost from the moment independence was declared — customs revenues were collapsing and the new government had no established credit.
Iturbide abdicated before the emission could have any meaningful monetary effect. The empire was dissolved, and most of these notes were never redeemed. Pick 1 by default — there was simply nothing before it.
