Guatemala's counterstamped coinage of the 1890s was a practical response to chronic shortages of domestically produced silver. Rather than striking entirely new coin, the government applied official stamps to foreign and older regional issues already in circulation, formally legitimizing them as legal tender. KM#214 specifically refers to host coins — typically Guatemalan or Central American Republic pesos — that received this treatment in 1894 under the administration of José María Reina Barrios, whose liberal government was simultaneously attempting to modernize the national monetary system ahead of eventual decimalization.
