| Mô tả mặt sau | A group of chess pieces — including kings, queens, bishops, and pawns — is arranged in a dramatic cluster at the center of the field, set against a background of intersecting diagonal lines suggestive of a chessboard. The circumferential legend CENTENARIO DE JOSE RAUL CAPABLANCA arcs around the upper portion of the coin, commemorating the centenary of the renowned Cuban world chess champion. The dates 1888 and 1988 appear in the lower field separated by dots, marking the span of the centennial. |

Cuba's commemorative peso program of the 1980s was largely export-driven — these pieces were struck for hard currency sales abroad rather than domestic circulation, as the peso's inconvertibility made foreign collector markets the only viable outlet. The chess theme reflects Cuba's genuine international stature in the sport: following the 1966 Olympiad held in Havana and Fidel Castro's personal promotion of chess as a revolutionary intellectual pursuit, the island produced multiple world-class grandmasters and hosted elite international competition throughout the Soviet period.
