Carlos Manuel de Céspedes freed his slaves and launched the Ten Years' War against Spanish rule on October 10, 1868 — an act that made him the founding figure of Cuban independence, though he never lived to see it. Pattern coinage honoring him proliferated in Cuba during the 1970s as the revolutionary government worked to anchor its legitimacy to the 19th-century independence struggle rather than to any pre-1959 republican tradition.
