Argentina's provincial governments retained the legal authority to issue their own currency well into the twentieth century, and Salta exercised that right intermittently to address chronic cash shortages in the country's northwestern interior. This 1916 peso belongs to a series issued under provincial treasury warrant rather than through any central banking mechanism — a distinction that affected how notes were accepted in commerce beyond Salta's borders.
Provincial paper from this period is frequently encountered with heavy fold damage and ink transfer from improper storage, a known condition pattern across the entire Salta series.
