The Provincia de Mendoza issued its own paper currency in the early 1900s under Argentina's system of provincial bank emissions, which persisted long after the Banco de la Nación Argentina's founding in 1891 had theoretically begun consolidating national monetary authority. Mendoza's provincial notes circulated primarily within the cuyo region and were frequently discounted when taken outside it — a practical problem merchants navigated with varying success.

The Lit. Compañía Sud-Americana de Billetes de Banco was Buenos Aires' principal security printer of the period, responsible for a significant share of provincial and municipal paper across Argentina and neighboring republics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
