Colombia's 1868 monetary reform replaced the earlier system of reales and escudos with a decimal structure tied to the French metric system — part of a broader effort among Latin American states to harmonize trade through standardized coinage. The resulting peso was essentially a Colombian iteration of the 5-franc module, sharing near-identical weight and fineness specifications to facilitate regional exchange.
Production was shared across multiple Colombian mints during this period, with Bogotá, Medellín, and Popayán all striking pieces under the same KM#154 type. Identifying the issuing facility requires close attention to mint marks, and the Hernández references 603–607 correspond to distinct emission varieties across those branches.
