Yabucoa is a municipality on Puerto Rico's southeastern coast, historically the center of the island's sugar industry — its last operating mill, the Central Lafaytte, closed in the 1980s after nearly a century of continuous production. This piece belongs to a commemorative municipal series issued under Puerto Rico's commonwealth administration, each coin honoring a distinct municipality. The series drew on the Spanish colonial peseta as a nominal unit, a deliberate nod to pre-1898 coinage before American annexation ended Puerto Rico's brief experiment with autonomous monetary administration.
