Voltregà's 1937 peseta is a product of the wartime emergency currency system that proliferated across Republican Catalonia after the Civil War disrupted normal banking. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own moneda local under authorization from the Generalitat, and the Ajuntament de Voltregà was one of the smaller communes to do so — the town itself, near Vic in Osona, had a population that barely justified its own emission.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of these municipal issues out of Barcelona, which accounts for the relatively consistent print quality across what were ostensibly local productions. The series was rendered obsolete when Francoist forces took Catalonia in early 1939.
