Quintanar issued this local peseta during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate small change in circulation prompted hundreds of municipalities across Castile and the rest of the Republican zone to print their own emergency fractional currency. These municipally sanctioned pieces — variously called "billetes locales" or simply "papel moneda de emergencia" — were legal only within the issuing locality and theoretically redeemable, though redemption became academic as the war turned against the Republic.
The Gari Morell catalog reference places this among the rarer provincial emissions; not all municipal issues from this period survived in any documented quantity.
