Pinoso is a small wine-producing municipality in the Vinalopó Mitjà comarca of Alicante province. Like hundreds of other Republican-controlled towns during the Civil War, it issued its own local emergency scrip in 1937 to address the near-total disappearance of small-denomination coinage from circulation — hoarding and metal requisitions had stripped the economy of anything useful for everyday trade.
Ayuntamiento-issued notes of this period were produced under improvised conditions, often by local printers with no banknote experience. The Gari catalogue documents over a thousand such municipal emissions from the Republican zone alone.
