Marmolejo is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and this note belongs to the vast ecosystem of locally issued emergency scrip that proliferated across Republican-held Spain during the Civil War after 1936. With the central banking system disrupted and small coinage vanishing from circulation almost immediately, municipal councils across Spain were authorized — or simply took it upon themselves — to print their own fractional currency.
