Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain on October 12, 1968, making this 1969 issue part of the country's first sovereign coinage series — struck just months after the handover. The new nation under Francisco Macías Nguema moved quickly to establish a distinct currency, though the peseta guineana was pegged to the Spanish peseta and the coins were almost certainly produced under contract rather than at any domestic facility.
Macías Nguema would be convicted of genocide and executed by firing squad a decade later. The early optimism embedded in these first issues aged badly.
