Binéfar is a small agricultural town in the Huesca province of Aragon, and this 1 Peseta note is one of hundreds of emergency municipal issues that flooded Republican-held Spain during the Civil War after the Republic's small-denomination coinage effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos. Local councils, trade unions, and cooperatives all stepped in to fill the gap, producing notes of wildly varying quality and legal standing.

The Gari Monetary catalog remains the principal reference for these Aragonese local issues, many of which survived only in tiny quantities as circulation was brief and redemption uncertain.
