Bellvei is a small municipality in the Baix Penedès comarca of Tarragona, and this 1 Pesseta note belongs to the vast, chaotic ecosystem of Civil War–era local emergency currency — the moneda local or bitllets municipals — that proliferated across Republican-controlled Catalonia after the military uprising of July 1936 disrupted the national coin supply. Small-denomination metal coinage vanished almost immediately, hoarded or melted, forcing hundreds of municipalities to print their own paper substitutes.
Imprenta Ramon in nearby El Vendrell handled printing for several of the surrounding townships during this period. The municipal rubber stamp served as the primary authentication device — a telling sign of how improvised the whole apparatus was.
