Alforja is a village in the Camp de Tarragona with a population that barely reached 1,000 during the Republic. That a municipality this small was printing its own peseta notes in 1937 speaks directly to the monetary chaos of the Civil War's home front — the Republican zone suffered acute small-change shortages as hoarding stripped coins from circulation, forcing hundreds of Catalan towns to issue their own emergency paper.
Imprenta De Ferrando in Reus handled a number of these local emissions from the surrounding comarca, giving them a degree of technical consistency that purely hand-stamped village issues lacked. Turró catalogues this as #104, placing it within a well-documented but still locally scarce series.
