The United Service Hotel operated in Auckland during a period of significant commercial expansion on the North Island, and tradesmen's tokens like this one circulated as practical necessity rather than novelty. R#560 places it within Renniks' classification of New Zealand tradesman's tokens — a series that dried up almost entirely after the 1881 Decimal Coinage Act made such private issues illegal.
