Obverse description Young diademed and draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, her hair elaborately coiffed and bound with a fillet, rendered in the 'young head' portrait style. The legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA is inscribed in raised Latin characters around the upper periphery, with the date 1874 appearing at the lower portion of the field. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The portrait closely follows the standard young head effigy used on contemporary British colonial coinage.

Reverse description Plain central field bearing the two-line raised inscription UNITED SERVICE HOTEL in bold capital letters, occupying the centre of the token. A circular legend around the periphery reads CORNER OF QUEEN & WELLESLEY STREETS * AUCKLAND, N.Z, separated by a decorative stop, providing the precise commercial address of the issuing establishment. A beaded border frames the entire reverse design, consistent with the obverse treatment.
