The Sierra Leone Company, chartered in 1792 to administer the Freetown settlement, lost its administrative charter in 1808 when the Crown absorbed the territory as a Crown Colony. This trial piece in lead almost certainly dates to the final months of the Company's authority — a minting exercise that never reached production, for an issuer that was itself about to cease to exist.
