The republic's coinage program was limited — most everyday transactions relied on British and Cape Colony currency circulating by convention rather than legal requirement. A domestic silver penny of this size was almost certainly a pattern or proof striking, never intended for general circulation. Hern's reference O13 places it within a small cluster of experimental issues from the late 1880s, before the Boer republics' monetary ambitions were extinguished entirely by the Anglo-Boer War.
