Obverse description Central shield of Type I design (straight top and sides) bearing the arms of the Orange Free State: the upper two-thirds of the shield depicts an orange tree flanked by three sheep to the left and a lion to the right, while the lower third shows an ox-wagon facing left; the shield is surmounted by three bugle horns, two in chief and one in base. The shield is flanked by a palm branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right, both tied at the base with a ribbon. A patriotic motto is inscribed on a ribbon scroll beneath the shield, with the state legend arching above and the date appearing in the lower field.
