Obverse description Facing right, the first crowned bust of King James I is depicted in profile, with the denomination mark positioned behind the head to the left. The royal effigy is rendered in the crude but characterful style typical of early Stuart hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, invoking the king's title and the emblematic rose without a thorn. The thistle mintmark appears at the commencement of the legend, identifying this as an issue of the first coinage period.
