The king holds a sceptre in his right hand, the shaft extending downward across the field. The portrait is rendered in the bold but somewhat rough relief typical of mid-12th-century English hammered coinage. A partial Latin legend reading HENRI REX surrounds the bust. A partial Latin legend naming the moneyer and mint surrounds the inner circle, reading +HENRII:ON:S;EDM, identifying the moneyer Henry operating at the Bury St Edmunds mint. The flan is irregularly shaped, with the legend partially visible due to the limitations of hand-struck production. |
