South Africa's George VI pennies from this window sit at the intersection of two constitutional crises. The 1948 election brought the National Party to power on an apartheid platform, immediately straining relations with the Crown and setting in motion the slow severance that would end with South Africa leaving the Commonwealth in 1961. Coins dated 1950 were struck in the final year before "GEORGIVS SEXTVS REX" gave way to a revised title — Parliament had stripped the king of his Emperor of India designation in 1948, forcing a mid-series die change across the entire coinage.
