Beschrijving keerzijde The central design features a bold six-pointed star (hexagram) formed by two interlocking equilateral triangles in high relief, centered on the round hole of the coin. The legend 'BRITISH WEST AFRICA' curves along the upper periphery in Latin capitals, flanked by the milled border. The date appears in the lower exergue, separated from the star by two raised pellets on either side. The overall composition is geometric and strongly stylized, reflecting the distinctive aesthetic of British colonial coinage for West Africa.

Aanvullende informatie

British West Africa was not a single colony but an administrative shorthand covering Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia — four territories with distinct economies that were nonetheless yoked to a shared currency managed by the West African Currency Board, established in 1912, the same year this series began. The Board issued coins specifically sized and composed to discourage melting for use in local metalworking, a genuine concern with earlier coinage in the region.

The 25-year production span across this type means examples exist from at least six different mint years, with London, Heaton, and Kings Norton all contributing at various points.
