John McTurk operated as a merchant in Ramsey, Isle of Man, and issued this token during a period when official copper coinage on the island was chronically short. The Isle of Man had no mint of its own, and shipments from the Royal Mint were irregular enough that local traders routinely plugged the gap with private issues. McTurk's token circulated as functional small change rather than as any kind of promotional piece.
Struck in brass rather than the more conventional copper, which distinguishes it immediately from most contemporary Manx merchant tokens.
