Additional information

The Treaty period designation refers to the Peace of Brétigny, signed in 1360, under which Edward III renounced his claim to the French throne in exchange for full sovereignty over an enlarged Gascony. The coins struck in the years immediately following dropped the French royal title from the legend — a direct reflection of that diplomatic settlement. When Edward repudiated the treaty in 1369, the French title returned to the coinage almost immediately.

North 1265 is distinguished from adjacent fourth coinage varieties by the absence of the French title, making correct attribution dependent on careful reading of the obverse legend rather than any striking characteristic.
