1 Penny - David II 1st Coinage, 2nd Issue

David II returned from English captivity in 1341 after the disaster at Halidon Hill and the decade-long exile in France, and his coinage program was a direct reassertion of Scottish royal authority. The 2nd Issue of his 1st Coinage reflects a subtle weight reduction from the earliest pennies, part of a broader adjustment to align Scottish silver with the degraded bullion realities of mid-14th century trade. Sp#5088 pieces are scarce partly because David spent eleven of his reign's years either in exile or imprisoned at the English court following his capture at Neville's Cross in 1346.
