Obverse description The arms of the Cape of Good Hope occupy the central field, depicting a heraldic shield with supporters on either side and a crest above. A ribbon below the shield bears the colonial motto SPES BONA (Good Hope). The legend CAPE OF GOOD HOPE arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1889 positioned in the lower field. The design is executed in a refined neoclassical engraving style with fine detail throughout.
