Biafra declared independence from Nigeria in 1967, triggering a civil war that ended in January 1970 with the republic's defeat and reabsorption. It has not existed as a sovereign state since. Coins issued under the Biafra name after that date are not products of any recognized government — they are fantasy pieces, typically sold to collectors under the framing of a separatist cause that retains symbolic currency among the Igbo diaspora.
