| Beschrijving voorzijde | A boldly rendered grid cross occupies the central field, with flared, concave-sided arms characteristic of the Maltese cross form. The interior of each arm is decorated with a dense, irregular pellet or granular pattern, giving the cross a richly textured appearance. The design fills the flan, leaving little to no border, consistent with the crude hammered coinage of medieval Gotland. |

Gotland's medieval coinage operated outside Swedish royal authority for much of the 13th century, issued under the commercial interests of Visby's merchant class rather than any crown. The island's Baltic trading position — connecting Novgorod routes westward to Lübeck and beyond — made locally trusted small silver a practical necessity. These penningar circulated as the working fraction of Hanseatic-era exchange, not prestige issues.
At 0.13g, individual specimens frequently show irregular flans and off-center strikes inherent to the production method, not degradation.
