The cross arms terminate in distinctive crescent-shaped finials with pellet ornaments, a design element typical of Danish pennings of the mid-11th century. The legend is distributed around the cross in the four quadrants, naming the moneyer and the mint of Lund. The die work is bold and irregular, consistent with hand-hammered Viking-Age coinage. |

Magnus the Good ruled Denmark only from 1042 until his death in 1047, having inherited the kingdom from Harthacnut under a succession pact made years earlier. His reign was largely consumed by war against the Wends and a prolonged contest with Sweyn Estridsen for control of Denmark. Coins struck in his name are accordingly few, produced across a short window with no opportunity to accumulate large mintages.
Hauberg 1 is the primary reference type for his Danish coinage, placing this penning at the opening of a catalog that has very few entries under his name.
