Harold III — known as Harald Hen, "the Whetstone" — ruled Denmark for just four years following the murder of his uncle Sweyn II's chosen successor. His reign was defined by a conscious softening of royal policy after the brutal taxation of his predecessor, and the coinage reflects this transitional moment: short-cross types of this period show marked variation in die execution, suggesting decentralized production across multiple minting sites rather than tight royal control.
