Obverse description Crude hammered field bearing a schematic facing or near-facing royal bust of King Harald Hardråde rendered in the primitive Viking-Age style typical of mid-eleventh-century Norwegian coinage. The effigy is executed in low relief with rudimentary facial features, and the surrounding field shows the irregular flan edges characteristic of hand-struck medieval pennings. The abbreviated Latin legend naming the king encircles the central device. The overall die workmanship reflects the nascent state of Norwegian mint production during Harald's reign.
