| Description de l’avers | Crowned royal cypher of Eric XIV (E surmounted by a crown) positioned centrally in the field, with the date divided on either side of the monogram, reading '6' to the left and 'Z' (a period numeral variant for '2') to the right, indicating the year 1562. The lettering is rendered in a crude Gothic style typical of hammered coinage of the Baltic region in the sixteenth century. The overall strike is irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production at the Reval city mint. |

Reval—modern Tallinn—submitted to Swedish rule in 1561, transferring allegiance from the deteriorating Livonian Order to Eric XIV amid the chaos of the Livonian War. This penning was struck the following year under the city's retained municipal minting privilege, one of the concessions Eric granted to secure Reval's loyalty without military force. The city would keep that privilege jealously for decades.
