Christian III's penning issues from Copenhagen represent some of the lowest-denomination coinage struck during the Danish Reformation period — a time when the king was simultaneously consolidating Lutheran state authority and managing the financial aftermath of the Count's War, which had left the royal treasury severely strained. The billon fineness here, at barely 12.5% silver, reflects deliberate debasement to stretch metal supplies across a long run of petty coinage spanning nearly two decades.
The Copenhagen mint was reorganized under Christian III following the turmoil of 1536, when he arrested the Catholic bishops and restructured both church and state finances in a single move.
