| 表面の説明 | Central short cross pattée with concave arms occupying the inner field, flanked by four crescent-shaped ornaments placed in the cardinal angles. The central device is enclosed within a raised inner dodecagonal border, beyond which a Latin legend in retrograde or irregular characters runs in the annular field. The outermost rim is defined by a beaded border, characteristic of late Viking-Age Danish hammered coinage. |

Canute IV's reign is remembered less for its coinage than for the events that ended it: he was murdered at the altar of St. Alban's Church in Odense in 1086, subsequently canonized in 1101 as Denmark's only royal saint. This penning belongs to the final years of a reign marked by sharp conflict with the Danish nobility over taxation and military obligations — the very pressures that drove his aristocratic enemies to organize his killing.
Hauberg's classification of this type remains the primary reference for Danish pennings of this period, a corpus built on coins that survive in very small numbers.
