Obverse description A crowned rampant lion facing forward occupies the central field, supporting the quartered heraldic shield of Burgundy-Brabant, which displays fleurs-de-lis, lions passant, and other dynastic charges in Gothic style. The lion is rendered with pronounced mane and curling tail in the bold, stylized manner characteristic of Burgundian Low Countries coinage. The shield is elaborately detailed with multiple quarterings, including a smaller inescutcheon at its base. The entire central device is enclosed within a plain inner circle, beyond which the circular Latin legend runs between two beaded borders. A mint-mark hand appears at the end of the legend.
