The Pardao was the dominant silver unit of Portuguese India for centuries, but the João Prince issues of 1808–1818 occupy a specific administrative moment: Portugal's royal court had fled Lisbon for Rio de Janeiro under British escort in 1807, leaving colonial mints like Goa operating under delegated authority during the prince regent's Brazilian exile.
