Obverse description Central field bears the name of Amanullah in stylized Arabic script, with the Afghan regnal date 1337 (AH) inscribed below. The inscription is enclosed within a wreath of laurel or olive branches, which frame the text on either side. A small decorative element or star appears above the central inscription at the top of the wreath. The overall design is bold and calligraphic, characteristic of early Amanullah-era coinage.

Additional information

Amanullah Khan declared Afghan independence from British suzerainty in April 1919, triggering the Third Anglo-Afghan War within weeks. This paisa belongs to the first coinage issued under his rule — a deliberate assertion of full sovereign minting authority at a moment when the war was still unresolved. The conflict ended that August with the Treaty of Rawalpindi, which formally recognized Afghanistan's right to conduct its own foreign affairs.

The KM#857 type is frequently encountered with weak, off-center strikes, a product of inconsistent die preparation at the Kabul mint rather than circulation wear.
