Tupou VI ascended to the throne in 2012 following the death of his brother George Tupou V, himself the monarch who had voluntarily dismantled much of the royal family's direct political power in Tonga's landmark 2010 democratic reforms. The timing of this coin's issue — three years into the new reign — places it squarely in the period when Tonga was still adjusting to a constitutional order in which the crown retained symbolic authority but no longer controlled the legislature outright.
