| Obverse description | Unadorned right-facing effigy of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and collar. The royal name legend TAUFA'AHAU TUPOU IV arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by a beaded border. The date of issue appears in the lower exergue. The portrait conveys a bold, sculptural quality characteristic of mid-twentieth-century Commonwealth coinage. |

| Reverse description | The crowned royal coat of arms of Tonga occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing three stars and a cross above crossed swords and a dove, supported on either side by crossed Tongan flags. A royal crown surmounts the shield, itself encircled by a laurel wreath. A scrolled ribbon below the shield carries the national motto KO E ʻOTUA MO TONGA KO HOKU TOFIʻA. The denomination PA'ANGA arcs above the arms and the issuer name TONGA appears prominently in the lower legend, all within a beaded border. |
