Sweden's transition away from the bronze 1 öre came ahead of the 1972 coinage reform, and iron was among the metals evaluated as a cheaper alternative for low-denomination production. This piece is a pattern from that evaluation process — struck at Kungliga Myntet to test planchet behavior, die wear characteristics, and public acceptability before any commitment to a new alloy. Iron was ultimately rejected; Sweden abandoned the 1 öre denomination entirely rather than reissuing it in a base metal.
