Obverse description Central field displays the crowned coat of arms of Holland, featuring a rampant lion within a shield surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is superimposed over a cross with forked tips extending toward the coin's edge. The peripheral legend, struck in Latin, encircles the design and reads .PHS. D:G. COM. HOL. Z. ZEL., identifying Philip II as Count of Holland and Zeeland. The overall style is characteristic of hammered coinage of the Low Countries in the late sixteenth century, with some irregularity in strike and planchet shape.
