Reverse description A robed figure, interpreted as the Virgin Mary or an allegorical personification of Divine Aid, is depicted seated facing forward upon a throne or bench, rendered in a crude but expressive hammered style typical of provincial Netherlandish coinage. The figure is shown in a formal, frontal pose with flowing drapery, set within a plain field. The encircling Latin legend .AVX. NOS. IN. NOM. DOM. — meaning 'Our help is in the name of the Lord' (a phrase derived from Psalm 124:8) — frames the central device around the periphery. The overall composition reflects the devotional iconographic tradition common to Spanish Habsburg coinage of the Low Countries during the late sixteenth century.
