Ferdinand II of León struck these small billon pieces to fund his ongoing campaigns against both the Almohad Caliphate and the competing Christian kingdoms to his north and east. The Saint James association is deliberate — the cult of Santiago de Compostela was deeply embedded in Leonese royal ideology, and Fernando leveraged it aggressively as a political tool throughout his reign. His 1170 treaty with Portugal had barely held, and by the late 1170s he was simultaneously managing frontier pressure on multiple borders.
