| Obverse description | A rampant lion passant facing left occupies the central field, rendered in the crude but vigorous Romanesque style typical of Leonese hammered coinage of the late 12th century. The lion's body is depicted with schematic detailing, its mane suggested by incised lines, and its tail curving over the back. The abbreviated legend REX (King) appears in the field, identifying the royal authority of the issuer. The flan is irregular in shape, as characteristic of hand-struck medieval issues, and the relief is generally weak at the periphery. |
