Issued to mark the 1998 Brasilia Presidential Summit agreements that formally ended the Ecuador–Peru border conflict — a dispute rooted in the poorly demarcated 1941 Protocol of Rio de Janeiro that had triggered shooting wars in 1941, 1981, and 1995. The 1995 Cenepa War was the most serious flare-up, lasting several weeks and costing hundreds of lives before ceasing-fire negotiations began in earnest.
At 57+ grams of 22-karat gold, this was a prestige issue from the outset, never intended for circulation. The KM#354a suffix distinguishes it from a silver counterpart struck in the same series.
