Additional information

Part of Peru's "Riqueza y Orgullo del Perú" commemorative circulation series, which the Banco Central de Reserva launched in 2010 to highlight architectural, natural, and cultural heritage sites across the country's regions. The Lima Cathedral, begun in 1535 on the orders of Francisco Pizarro and built largely on the foundations of an Inca palace, took over two centuries to complete in its present form following repeated earthquake damage — the 1746 Lima earthquake destroyed much of the structure, necessitating a near-total reconstruction.
