This note exists because of the January 1960 redenomination that replaced the old franc with the nouveau franc at 100:1 — the Caisse Centrale had existing stocks of its 50 Franc notes that were simply overprinted rather than reprinted, a pragmatic stopgap common across French territories during the transition period. The overprint reads "1 Nouveau Franc," placing it among a small family of similarly converted issues circulating in French overseas territories in 1961.
Fel's design work and the Hourriez/Régnier engraving were originally executed for the earlier 50 Franc issue, making this a second life for an already-aging plate design.
